The problem, in one line
What happens
An exploratory NIMHANS study of 64 'empty-nest' parents aged 45 to 65, whose adult children had emigrated, found loneliness was associated with higher psychological distress, difficulty regulating emotions and problematic series watching. Of the 64 participants, 22 (34.3%) were classified as having higher levels of loneliness. Women in the study reported significantly higher levels of loneliness and psychological distress than men. The participants came from families in Karnataka, Haryana and Punjab, and more than half had been in the empty-nest phase for over five years. The authors said interventions that strengthen social connectedness, promote adaptive emotion regulation and encourage healthier technology use could help parents through the transition.
