What happens
Sikkim has identified 40 high-hazard glacial lakes, with 16 of them classified as being at the highest risk of outbursts that could threaten downstream settlements. Of the 40 lakes, 16 are in Category A, two in Category B and nine in Category C, while 13 remain unclassified. An outburst in Sikkim in October 2023 caused at least 60 deaths and extensive damage in the Mangan, Gangtok, Pakyong and Namchi districts, and destroyed the Chungthang dam. The Sikkim government has identified Shako Chho as most vulnerable to a glacial lake outburst flood, and its detailed project report has been submitted to the National Disaster Management Authority. Additional early-warning sensors have been proposed across Sikkim, and a workshop focused on ensuring verified, science-based information reaches the public.
