What happens
On 12 October 2023 the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador told lawyers and the public to rely only on authoritative sources, such as official court websites, commercial publishers or CanLII, for case law and statutes. The same notice says AI-generated submissions must be verified with ‘meaningful human control’, for example by cross-referencing reliable legal databases. On 2026-10-09 a public database of court decisions dealing with AI-hallucinated content listed 2,180 cases, and says it does not track every fake citation.
