What happens
The maximum annual rent increase in Manitoba is currently set at 1.8 per cent, but landlords can apply for larger increases if they can show the hike will not cover costs they have incurred. Buildings that are 20 years old or more and have a monthly rent over $1,670 are exempt from the rent control guideline. That threshold will increase to $2,000 as of Jan. 1, 2027, and next year's rent increase guideline will be set at three per cent. A Winnipeg tenant received a proposed 10 per cent hike that would raise her rent by $200 per month, and the company hasn't explained why it is applying for an above-guideline increase. About 200 tenants in her building signed a letter to the Residential Tenancies Branch objecting to the hike.
