What happens
A Minister ordered officials to expedite work on relief centres at 27 locations in the flood-prone Sholinganallur and Perungudi zones and to complete it in three days. Food for residents of flood-prone areas is to come from 21 Amma Canteens in Perungudi, 17 Amma Canteens in Sholinganallur and six community kitchens. In Sholinganallur zone, work on 95.7 km of drains has been completed and 13.385 km is under way; in Perungudi, 145.27 km of 154.19 km has been completed. Six localities in Madipakkam, including Balaji Nagar and LIC Nagar, were repeatedly waterlogged in heavy rain where the 30-feet-wide Narayanapuram Lake surplus-water channel meets the eight-feet-wide Balaji Nagar storm-water drain. Residents sought desilting, a joint field inspection by the Greater Chennai Corporation and the Water Resources Department, and a flow-guiding wall, but say the authorities are yet to respond to their representation.
