The problem, in one line
What happens
The Yukon government is lifting the residential rent cap and will again allow tenants to be evicted without cause. The current cap limits rent increases to the average rate of inflation for the previous two years; it was introduced in 2021. Under the proposed amendments, landlords would need to give tenants at least six months notice before increasing their rent or evicting them. If the amendments are passed, the rent cap will be gone as of Dec. 1. The Official Opposition leader said tenants are concerned there is no longer any way for them to anticipate what their rent costs will be from one year to the next.
