What happens
Karnataka's Sugar Minister said the State is moving to establish a scientific and transparent system to ensure fair returns for sugarcane farmers, addressing cane weight, sugar recovery, harvesting schedules and payment practices. Responding to widespread complaints of weighing discrepancies at sugar factories, the State is evaluating independent, government-supervised weighbridges in critical areas. The State also plans to push for clearer calculations regarding recovery rates and post-harvest wastage deductions. Sugarcane farmers blocking the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway in Belagavi district demanded, among other things, transparency in weighing and recovery assessment in factories. They also sought government-supervised establishment and monitoring of computerised weighing scales, and a statewide sugarcane cutting and transport calendar enforced by the district administration.
