What happens
An estimated 7.4% of Indians aged 60 and above, around 8.8 million people, live with dementia, according to a nationwide study using Longitudinal Ageing Study in India data. KEM Hospital's Memory Clinic, started on September 21, 2022, has registered 375 patients, and is the only dedicated Memory Clinic in a government hospital in Maharashtra, according to its head of neurology. Maharashtra's National Health Mission says Memory Clinic OPDs have been set up in 34 districts, but its website does not provide a district-wise list of them. Dignity Foundation's Dementia Day Care Centre in Mahim has a capacity of 20 people diagnosed with dementia. A Mumbai family that looked for full-time help through an agency found it difficult to find people trained to care for someone with dementia.
