What happens
Halifax is considering building new roads to connect neighbourhoods affected by a wildfire three years ago. A lack of egress became a huge issue during the May 2023 wildfire, which destroyed 150 homes in Upper Tantallon and Hammonds Plains, and hundreds of people were caught in long lines of traffic. The options on display were gated emergency-only routes, permanent paved roads paid for by the city, or paved roads with some development to share costs. Indigo Shores in Middle Sackville is ranked the second-worst community for egress in the municipality. The city is hosting an online survey on the connector routes, with more public meetings planned into the spring of 2027.
