What happens
The BMC and the Sukoon Nilaya Foundation announced plans to open seven free palliative care and adult daycare centres across Mumbai, one in each of the city's seven administrative divisions. In Maharashtra alone there are potentially 2.6 million people who need palliative care, but only 20,000 get access to holistic and comprehensive care, according to the chairman of the King George V Memorial Trust. The Sukoon Nilaya centre has expanded from 13 beds to 35 beds and is in the process of expanding to 75 beds. The municipal commissioner said that with India's population ageing, the fraction needing palliative care could reach 20-25%.
