What happens
Housing N.W.T. says 168 applicants are currently on the social housing waitlist in Behchokǫ̀, nine more than in January 2026. The average time spent on the social housing waitlist is approximately two years, according to Housing N.W.T. One applicant has been waiting for eight-and-a-half years and says she was told about five times that she would receive a unit, only to learn someone else had been given her spot. Housing N.W.T. allocates homes on a point-based priority policy, based on urgent need, immediate health or safety risks and family size rather than application date. Territorial policy prevents MLAs from contacting local housing staff directly.
