The problem, in one line
What happens
A pregnant woman with a high-risk condition was turned away at a hospital in Kiambu County that, like many others, had suspended services under SHA owing to unpaid reimbursements. The Rural and Urban Private Hospitals Association of Kenya directed its members to suspend SHA services over unpaid claims, and outstanding SHA debts had reached Sh76 billion. A spot check found patients in Nairobi County were being forced to pay out of pocket for services. In an enforcement notice on 1 August 2026, SHA said no patient needing emergency care should be denied, delayed, referred or transferred because they cannot pay or lack benefit confirmation.
