What happens
N.B. Power is hoping to raise its rates 17.4 per cent over the next three years, beginning with a 5.5 per cent increase. N.B. Power's residential customers have experienced a combined 36.4 per cent increase in electricity consumption charges over the last four years. N.B. Power recognizes the proposed increases may have a disproportionate effect on low-income customers and others experiencing financial hardship. The utility is looking to raise an extra $14 million from the rental of more than 276,000 water heaters, with three-year increases of 27 to 39 per cent depending on tank size. A full hearing into the request by the New Brunswick Energy and Utilities Board will likely be scheduled early in the new year.
