What happens
According to a Kerala Water Authority letter of November 6, 2025, there were 5,444 public taps within the city limits, based on which the Corporation has been paying nearly ₹1 crore a month. The Corporation will commission a survey to identify unused and illegally installed public taps, and geo-tag and meter those in use. The Kerala Water Authority has yet to respond to a Corporation letter of July 8, 2025 seeking the number of functional public taps and those fitted with meters. Until water charge arrears were written off, the Corporation had to set aside around ₹5 crore from its Plan fund annually to meet the dues. A councillor said certain colonies have gaps in household water connections and families there depend entirely on public taps.
