What happens
A 2023 study of the Rajasthan government's online portal for silicosis registration, certification and relief found that 23,436 cases of silicosis, including 6,876 deaths, had been certified. Certification is given by community health centres or district hospitals based on a medical examination and a chest radiograph, and the process needs multiple hospital visits that many people cannot afford. One resident of Syalodra village registered on the portal three times in three years; each time her X-ray went for analysis, her registration was cancelled, and she never learned who the doctor was. Certified patients receive free medicines, ₹5,000 every month and other facilities. Residents say silicosis has claimed more than 50 lives in Syalodra over the years, and each oxygen cylinder costs about ₹1,000.
