What happens
In 2025, 76,941 of the 204,562 bodies handled by Japanese police were people who died alone in their homes. About 22,222 people were found at least eight days after death, and in 7,148 cases the body was not discovered for over a month. People aged 65 and over accounted for 58,919 of these deaths, or 76.6% of the total. Men were 3.8 times more likely than women to die alone and remain undiscovered for longer periods.
